Can Damaged Fins Grow Back?

It can happen that fish chase each other, damaging fins or even biting a tasty morsel out of a fin.

Not such a pretty sight to see a tropical fish with a half torn off or damaged fin, feeler blade swimming around in your tank.

In swordtails it is very common for his tail fin to be mistaken by other fish as a tasty snack.

Can damaged fins regrow?

If the water quality is optimal and the fish is in good condition, a bitten off fin can grow back quickly.

Use a water conditioner to make the water quality optimal for faster healing. It prevents bacterial infections and aids in healing. Stress is effectively eliminated and the fish’s resistance is improved.

The water conditioner is normally used in water changes. It can also helps in faster healing of eaten-off-damaged fins and fish skin damage.

All fins that are NOT damaged to life will quickly regrow. So it does depend on the severity of the injury! The fins actually contain fin rays, a kind of thread that can often be clearly seen when the fish swims against the light. Those fin rays are interconnected by the membrane. The fin rays on the side of the tropical fish are important, they must not be damaged!

Prevention is better than cure!

The obvious thing to do is to locate the culprit, a fin eater or the aggressor and remove it from your aquarium.
