How Do You Make a Fish Tank Sustainable?

How-do-you-make-a-fish-tank-sustainable

Use energy more consciously

Put your aquarium in a warm place in the room, this way the thermostat doesn’t have to work as hard. Set the temperature of your aquarium one or two degrees lower. For some fish, this may not be possible, but for most fish species, the temperature can easily be a small setting lower than how it is often set. Aquarium plants also often do better at a lower temperature. Two small thermostats are more efficient than one large one, try checking the efficiency. Adjust the water circulation properly so that the heat from the thermostat is better distributed through the water. You do this by redirecting the pump’s discharge direction or moving the air pump.

Environmental awareness – Insulating the aquarium reduces energy consumption

It seems like a big operation but it is not. By taking a thin plywood board and placing an insulating material such as Styrofoam, PUR foam or rock wool between it, you can wrap the back of the aquarium thickly. This keeps heat inside the aquarium longer and keeps cold from the outside more. By using a back wall, the insulated wall is barely noticeable. Some back walls are made of Styrofoam, this insulates and can help save energy. The insulation also reduces noise from entering or leaving the tank.

Packing the outside pump and hoses with insulating material

Not only can the aquarium be packed with insulating material, an outdoor pump and hoses to and from your pump can also be insulated. You can use insulation material for radiator tubes to add insulation to the hoses.

Lighting and light output

On average, the light burns for 12 hours a day, of course it doesn’t hurt to keep the light on for an hour less. It reduces algae growth and energy consumption. Use an analog timer, the fish get a better day/night rhythm and you avoid leaving the light on too long. You also have nothing to worry about. By turning on the lights late in the day you will have more light in your room and more atmosphere in the evening when it starts to get dark.

Most aquariums have enough light output with one regular daylight bulb, large aquariums may need more than one bulb.

A red lamp is not always necessary, the color also depends on what kind of plants are in the tank. You can deliberately choose to take plants that do not require extremely high light levels.

LED lighting above aquariums LED lighting uses less energy

In many aquarium stores today you can buy LED lights that save a lot of electricity and last longer. The purchase of LED lights can be pricey, so check first if the LED lights will cover the cost of the purchase in the longer term. Due to the beam with many colors released by LED lighting, the beam of light shining through the water in the aquarium looks very true to nature. The downside is that it is not yet suitable for fairly tall tanks with plants. The light cannot reach the depth there. The LED technology is being further developed so that more and more depth can be reached with the small LEDs.
